We have serious dog and cat allergies in our home. Our daughter would love a pet that she can hold and play with. Guinea pigs or rabbits are an option but we have heard that allergies to these animals can develop over time. Does anyone know of a good hypoallergenic pet that might suit our family? Thank you.

I heard siamese cats are hypoallergenic but im not sure. Im not allergic to the fur on cats its the dander on them i would like to know if their are any cats aside from hairless cats that are hypoallergenic?

Hairless cats are NOT hypoallergenic–as you pointed out it’s the dander–dried saliva and skin flakes–that trigger allergies, and hairless cats have plenty of that.
Some breeds do seem to trigger fewer allergies than others, but it’s never a sure thing, and every once in a while an individual sufferer will find a cat he can tolerate for whatever weird twist of fate or genetics. So really, it’s a crapshoot.
Although…for four thousand dollars, you CAN own your very own genetically engineered hypoallergenic cat.

A firm called Allerca selectively bred a low-allergy cat about 3 years ago. Other companies are trying to duplicate their results with different techniques and moderate success.

I can’t say that there are any truly hypoallergenic rabbits, but the one that sheds the least and there for produces the smallest amount of pet dander is the Mini Rex. The good news is that it makes an excellent pet and comes in a variety or colors. Nothing else comes close to the softness of Rex fur, it is like crushed velvet .

My brother really wants to get a cat and he likes the siamese but thinks that it would not be good for him because he is allergic to cats. However, the oriental cat breed is hypoallergenic and is bred from siamese cats so I don’t know if this means that both breeds are good for people with allergies, or something else…
