Are Yorkies considered hypoallergenic?
Question by : Are Yorkies considered hypoallergenic?
I’ve heard that they are, but I also know that poodles and maltese are hypoallergenic too. When my friend got a maltese poo I wasn’t allergic to him at first, but when I visited on Sunday I started getting hives. Mabey it’s the food that the puppy eats? I’m not sure, but I don’t want to be allergic to my Yorkie so is there a shampoo or something that can lower the allergy levels, if I am allergic to Yorkies?

Answer by Jennifer M~ Got the Giggles
Your allergist should be able to tell you if it is dander or saliva from dogs you are allergic to.
No dog is truly hypoallergenic. My friend has a poodle that hardly sets off her allergies at all, yet that dogs littermate brother makes her sneeze like mad. It all depends upon the individual dog and you.
You may be allergic to your yorkie, you may not. We can’t tell you as all allergies are different.
Quality food can make a dog shed less, so technically it could make a difference.
Yorkies don’t have a thick undercoat like many breeds so hey can affect allergies less. Keep him well groomed for your best chances of not reacting. Washing too often can actually be bad for his coat.

Are Siberian Huskies hypoallergenic to any degree?
Question by dancemom: Are Siberian Huskies hypoallergenic to any degree?
My husband and I are considering getting a siberian husky puppy to add to our family. I have done a lot of research on the needs/demands of such a dog, but can’t seem to find too much info on how they are for people with allergies. My husband has allergies and so this is what is holding us back. I have read conflicting arguments on both ends as far as whether they are/are not. I DO realize that no dog is completely hypoallergenic and that huskies are HEAVY shedders…and that the allergies people have to them lie in pet’s dander not necessarily in the hair, so please no snide comments about these things. I am asking for those who have experience with huskies to give me some feedback on whether or not these dogs are good for those with allergies. Or if there is anyone out there who has allergies and also owns a husky to tell me how that has worked out for them. I appreciate your comments and help!

They’re a double-coated breed, that blows their coat in huge clumps (with dead skin cells attached) twice yearly and loses coat year-round.
So the answer? No. Not hypoallergenic to *any* degree.

Cute Kitten Photo Alert

At the place I was staying at in New Hampshire last weekend, the people who own the property breed cats. These are Siberian cats that are claimed to be hypoallergenic. The lady who breeds these cats suffers from cat allergies, and has no problems with them. Which is why she got into breeding them to begin with, which she does more as a hobby as she loves them so much.
Personally, I’m an adopt a cat at a shelter who needs a home kind of person, but kittens are always cute, no matter where they come from.

a thought about hypoallergenic cats?
Question by stripedbook: a thought about hypoallergenic cats?
I just thought of this…what happens to all the kittens these companies breed who aren’t “perfect specimens”? Are they flushed down the toilet? Seriously, what happens? This is just like a puppy mill! Sure youre getting a cute sweet little animal, but if you REALLY care about animals, why would you put your money into something that perpetuated the suffering of their species?
I wonder if they keep that cats in small cages and pump them with hormones and test each little kitten that comes out of it’s mothers belly, to see if it’s “hypoallergenic” and if not…down the toilet it goes? Or what? Maybe they give the kittens that don’t “make the grade” to the local humane society to further add to the proliferation of cats on the market now?
Does anyone know? Has anyone wondered?
I just think it would be better (for the animals) if these organizations concentrated their scientific efforts into developing a vaccine for humans with allergies to cats.
there are moral and ethical objections to breeding – and destroying – hundreds of undesirable and unwanted allergen-bearing kittens (in a world where hundreds, if not thousands, are already destroyed daily) while trying to perfect an allergen-free strain. It is classed by many cat lovers as animal research because of the risk to the cats.

Unless you work for the company that breeds the cats, you will probably never find out what happens to the kittens that dont make the cut. Im sure its quite hush-hush.
I seem to remember I checked out a link once to a company that makes these cats out of curiousity.. it was somewhere around $ 30,000 for one of these cats! I dont know anyone who wants a cat THAT badly.

From Wikipedia:
“A Hypoallergenic dog breed is a dog breed (or crossbreed) that is alleged to be safer for allergic persons than other breeds, although a New York Times article finds that allergists believe that “all the safe-breed theories are just wishful thinking”.[1] Allergists do recognize that at times a particular allergy patient will be able to tolerate a particular dog, but they agree that “the luck of the few with their pets cannot be stretched to fit all allergic people and entire breeds of dogs.”[1]”

Q&A: Cat food question for my cat’s allergies?
Question by Dude24: Cat food question for my cat’s allergies?
My cat has food allergies, she itches a lot to the point of scratching off her fur and getting scabes. She also sheds a lot.
At the moment we are feeding her Meow Mix, however my vet recommended switching her to Science Diet’s hypoallergenic cat food.
I am unsure of exactly what is causing her allergies, but I presume it’s probably corn. Since Science Diet is fairly expensive I was thinking about trying Purina One or switching to Iam’s canned cat food.
Any ideas?
Best answer:
Answer by Ariane deR
Yeah it could be corn , there’s a lot of it in the Meow Mix Corn and wheat are major allergens for them.
Why not just ditch the grains? Cats do not need all those carbs. Rice seems to be less a problem than corn or wheat as far as allergies but they still do not need all that sugar, they are not made to have to produce so much insulin to process the sugars.
& i would suggest at least half canned to keep her well hydrated. I’m thinking dry skin might exacerbate the problem. Cats developed to get their moisture in their food ( their prey would be 70% water, like most mammals) and they don’t usually have a strong thirst drive. So if they are on all dry food they probably dont drink enough water to make up for the lack of moisture in the food.
Do you mean the Iams Veterinary Diet for skin & coat? that is made from lamb? & also has barley . It’s sure not cheap either. Personally I would be tempted to try some Merrick Before Grain canned to see if that would work. I just checked the prices of both on petfooddirect.com and the Before Grain is a lot less ( a little over $ 1 for a 5.5 oz can vs $ 2 per 6 oz for that Iams veterinary.
You could try something like that and see if it works. If it doesn’t then you would have to try a different type of meat like lamb or rabbit.
I hope you can get this sorted so your cat will get over her allergies.
& here is a vet’s site with good info on cat nutrition. http://catinfo.org.
