Breeds of hypoallergenic cats?
Question by Canine luver: Breeds of hypoallergenic cats?
I have a Siberian cat and I have her because I researched the hypoallergenic qualities and my mom decided that she’d trust me and actually go see the kittens to see if she was allergic.. She and I are both allergic to cats and we have NO allergies to our Siberian whatsoever!
I am wondering if there are other purebred cats with hypoallergenic qualities etc or cats that people have noticed they are not allergic to?
(I know it varies with each individual but I’d love to know the possibilities so I could see if I’m not allergic and can adopt more cats!)
I’ve heard of allerca but those cats are usually about $ 7,000 and you can’t test it out first. I’m just wondering about normal purebred cats that aren’t genetically altered

Although there is no scientific proof, the Siberian and Russian Blue cat breeds are said to be naturally hypoallergenic. Other cat breeds like the Sphynx, LaPerm, Cornish Rex, and Devon Rex don’t have some of the normal layers of cat fur possessed by more common breeds. These breeds can sometimes be tolerated by people with only mild allergies to cats. However, the most common allergy is to the cat’s saliva rather than the fur, so for those people, even a hairless cat breed may not be the answer.
The Allerca Company announced in 2006 that they have been successful in breeding a line of hypoallergenic cats. Although there have been no studies reviewed on this claim, many people are already placing orders for hypoallergenic kittens. Felix Pets is another company who claims to be in the process of developing a hypoallergenic cat breed.

some cats don’t shed much so you might be able to get a cat that doesn’t shed like the Cornish Rex or the Devon Rex. also, if you wash your cat about twice a week it should reduce the risk of you getting an allergic reaction.
Siamese cats are supposed to be, but it kind of depends on the person and how bad your allergies are.
The only other breed that I know of that have hypoallergenic qualities are Russian Blue’s. The thing you have to look at with the breeds are their Fel d-1 levels, This is the name of the allergy that most people react to in cats. Both Siberians and Russian Blues usually produce low Fel d-1 levels which makes them the most hypoallergenic of all cat breeds.
A lot of people tend to recommend hairless breeds to people with allergies because they don’t have hair. But the hair usually isn’t the problem it’s the allergen (Fel d-1) in a cats saliva, So usually hairless breeds only work out with people who have very mild allergies, because none of the hairless breeds are known for producing low Fel d-1. They produce about as much as any other domestic cat aside from the Siberian and Russian Blues. So if your looking to adopt more cats, I’d advise checking out Russian Blues, or sticking to Siberians! Good luck!
