Are Selkirk Rexs good hypoallergenic cats?

Question by Mary Kate: Are Selkirk Rexs good hypoallergenic cats?
I’m usually allergic to animal fur, so my family chose a Bichon Frisé for a dog and I’ve never had a problem with allergies in the seven years we’ve had him. Now I’m looking for a cat and I’ve noticed that the Selkirk Rex has similar traits to the Bichon in that they both have multi-layered, curly hair. I was just wondering if anyone knew if a Selkirk would make a good addition to our family even if I’m allergic to most cats.

Go to the breeder, handle the cats and see if you are allergic, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic pet, it’s simply a sales gimmick.

You have to understand that people who are allergic to animals are allergic to the proteins in their saliva and urine… so fur really has nothing to do with it.Generally, the shorter the hair, the less likely you are to be allergic simply because the saliva that dries (dander) is less on an animal with shorter hair.

The proteins from the hair, saliva or urine of household pets cause an allergic reaction that attacks the eyes and the airways, like hay fever, and can result in asthmatic symptoms. It may also cause atopic dermatitis or a nettle rash.
It is often difficult to avoid the allergens that can come from other people’s pets or be transported by people who have been in contact with animals. School classes can be overloaded with pet allergens.
Most often the allergies are to cats or dogs, but rats, mice, guinea pigs, hamsters, pet birds, horses, cows or poultry can be involved.

Get the right Hypoallergenic dog food

Hypoallergenic dog food may sound silly to some, but to others they know that their canine friends depend on it. Just like humans, dogs can have allergies and like humans some of these allergies are to foods and can be life threatening. This is why there are many who resort to homemade dog food, but this may not be the right choice.go to www.myhuntingdogsite.info for more information

Question by Luis: Is there a shot for cats to make them hypoallergenic?
I heard something a while back about a shot that you can give cats to make their dander less of an allergen, does anyone know anything about this?

Q&A: What is a good hypoallergenic dog food?

Question by Sunny: What is a good hypoallergenic dog food?
My dog is on a prescription diet from the vet but it $ 46.50 for a 17 pound bag and my dog doesn’t like it very much. The vet said I could try a different dog food as long as it was hypoallergenic. I wonder what a good tasting hypoallergenic that doesn’t cost too much is.

Are there any hypoallergenic cats I can get?

Question by tralala.h: Are there any hypoallergenic cats I can get?
I want a cat, but I’m allergic to them.
I once heard something about cats that people can have even if they’re allergic to them, and I looked it up today and they’re called hypoallergenic cats.
The thing is, I read this article on how there are no such thing as hypoallergenic cats, but I heard there was, so is there?
& What breed are they?

nope…there are some cats that give less dander than others which cut back allergies for people who are slightly allergic. no cat is 100% hypoallergenic even the ones “with no hair” because they still do have really short fine hairs. you can however have one of those and give it a bath about once a week and that will cut back on about 99% of the dander and allergens that cats produce

Q&A: Where is the best place to find hypoallergenic cats?

Question by Prufrock: Where is the best place to find hypoallergenic cats?
I love cats but I’m really allergic. *pouts* I want to get one of those cats that are made for people who are allergic. Mom says shots or meds would cost too much.
